Building Smarter Exports Through Resilience and Risk Awareness

- Suraj Sakhhari Borlepava

My business background was inherited but life never let me walk only the traditional path. It taught me, broke me, and then rebuilt me. Five years of FMCG distribution experience gave me strong practical grounding, and then a postgraduate degree in Supply Chain Management and Logistics from Leeds, United Kingdom added international perspective teaching me the critical importance of processes, risk, and planning. When both these experiences came together, the direction toward EXIM became clear where past experience and education could both be applied practically.

Connecting with Udyami Maharashtra and Dr. Omkaar Hari Maali’s mentorship at this decisive stage gave my journey not just information but direction the discipline of transactions, risk awareness, and the mental readiness to accept reality. But the hardest test came soon after: in only my second deal, payment for a container that had already arrived at JNPT port was refused by a known contact. Legal proceedings continue to this day. That incident financially and mentally devastating caused me to withdraw from business and people for a period. What brought me back was the support of mentors and colleagues. That experience permanently embedded the rule: advance payment is non-negotiable in every deal. Today, two turmeric containers have been successfully delivered, a skincare brand has been launched, and the business has reached ₹85 lakh annual turnover.
